Biography

Czech-born German-language novelist and short story writer whose surreal, nightmarish fiction gave the English language the word 'Kafkaesque.' The Trial, The Castle, and The Metamorphosis depict individuals trapped in incomprehensible, oppressive systems. He asked his friend Max Brod to burn his manuscripts after his death; Brod refused, and literature is richer for it.
