American poet, memoirist, and civil rights activist whose autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is a landmark of American literature. Her life was extraordinary — she was a singer, dancer, actress, director, and activist who worked with both Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011.
