The paintings, sculptures, engravings, and portraits across the site are drawn from public-domain and open-access collections. We lead with period art rather than modern book covers because, for a 2,500-year-old work, a contemporaneous painting is the closest thing to a true likeness of the text.

Licensing & attribution
We use only public-domain or openly-licensed (CC0 / CC BY) images for the artwork and author likenesses you see across the site. Each artwork carries its own credit — artist, title, year, and holding institution — in the caption beneath it on the work page. Modern edition covers are never self-hosted; they're shown in the buy-box only, served directly from Open Library's covers API.
If you believe an image is misattributed or shouldn't appear here, please get in touch and we'll correct it.
